Pistachio Nuts for improving Heart Health

Pistachios great for preventing heart problems and contain lot of essential vitamins for good pink health"A handful of pistachio nuts a day can protect you against heart disease, according Pennsylvania State University researchers."

Pistachios contain an antioxidant called Lutein, also found in fruit and leafy green veg. The scientists have found that Lutein helps to bring down levels of “bad” cholesterol in the blood. One or two handfuls of Pistachios can make a big enough difference to lower the risk of heart disease by lowering build-up of bad cholesterol in the arteries.

Participants in this study ate 1.5 ounces of pistachios daily for four weeks, and then ate three ounces daily for four more weeks. They saw a 9 percent drop in LDL cholesterol on the low-nut diet and a 12 percent drop after eating more.

Adding to it’s heart benefits, Pistachios are a good source of copper, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and B6. The nuts deliver 30 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. This makes them a great snack from nutrition standpoint. However, nutritionists warn that eating too many can make you gain weight. Experts also advise to eat unsalted nuts rather than salted ones.

This research challenges the belief that a low-fat diet is best for heart health. Increasingly, studies now show that a diet with a moderate amount of healthful monounsaturated fat, like the kind found in pistachios, is a more effective way to prevent heart disease than reducing overall fat intake.">
