Health Benifits of Karela / Bitter GourdBitter gourd or Bitter Melon is the bitterest vegetable found on the earth. It has rough, dark green skin with white core inside. It is also known by names of Karela, Balsam Pear, Pavakka , Kaipakka , Ampalaya. Many people find it unpalatable, but it is used very creatively in Indian and Chinese cooking. And there are many health reasons that you take this bitter vegetable seriously.

Nutritional Benefits: Bitter gourds are dense with precious nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, C, magnesium, folic acid, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, and has high dietary fiber. It is rich in iron, contains twice the beta-carotene of broccoli, more calcium of spinach and good amount of potassium.

Diabetes mellitus: Bitter melon contains a hypoglycemic compound (plant insulin) that is highly beneficial in lowering sugar levels in blood and urine. Bitter melon juice has been shown to significantly improve glucose tolerance without increasing blood insulin levels. It should, therefore, be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic.

Healing Injuries: It has high anti bacterial properties and is very effective in treating wounds, burns and other skin diseases.

Blood disorders: Bitter gourd juice is highly beneficial for treating blood disorders like blood boils and itching due to toxemia. It is also helpful against jaundice for the same reason.

Energy: Regular consumption of bitter gourd juice improves energy and stamina level.

Eye problems: The high beta-carotene and other properties make it very useful vegetable for eye problems and improving eyesight.

Alcohol Intoxication: Bitter melon juice helps cleanse and repair and nourish liver problems due to alcohol consumption. The leaf juice is considered as an antidote for alcohol intoxication

Immune system: This bitter juice can enhance your immune system and increase your body's resistance against infection.

Piles: Ayurveda suggests three teaspoonfuls of juice from bitter melon leaves with a glassful of buttermilk as a remedy for piles. Take this juice every morning on empty stomach for about a month.

Respiratory disorders: Take two ounces of fresh bitter melon juice and mix with a cup of honey diluted in water. Drink daily to improve asthma, bronchitis and Pharyngitis. It is extensively used in treating chronic cough.

Stomach Issues: It stimulates digestion by properly stimulating the secretion of gastric juices. It is also used in the treatment of intestinal worms, constipation and diarrhea.

Women Health: It is helpful in menstrual disorders treatment and female genital tract related problems. It also helps in secretion of milk during lactation phase after pregnancy.

Caution: Excessive consumption (more than two ounces) may cause mild abdominal pain or diarrhea. Pregnant women should avoid taking too much bitter gourd or its juice as it may stimulate the uterus that may lead to preterm labor.
