Mushrooms for Breast Cancer prevention

Breast Cancer prevention with natural foods dietMushrooms have been used in home remedies and as a natural health aid for hundreds of years. Now a new study highlights the importance of eating mushrooms more than ever. New research claims "Eating a daily portion of mushrooms could slash the risk of breast cancer by two thirds".

Scientists found that women consuming at least a third of an ounce, that is as little as 10 grams, or less than one button mushroom, were 64 per cent less likely to develop a breast cancer. Dried mushrooms were less effective. And women who combined a mushroom with regular consumption of green tea saw an even greater benefit, reducing the risk of breast cancer by almost 90%.

The research was carried out at the University of Western Australia. The study analyzed the eating habits of more than 2,000 women in China including women, half of the study, suffered from breast cancer. China was chosen for the study as the rates of the disease in China are four to five times lower than in some western countries.

Estrogen, the female hormone, plays a major role in the development of breast cancer. In estrogen-dependent breast tumors, estrogen stimulates the formation of breast cancer growth factors. Some evidence suggests that mushrooms are similar to breast cancer drugs which are called aromatase inhibitors. White button mushrooms are found to suppress breast cancer cell growth by preventing the synthesis of estrogen.

In addition to these properties, mushrooms have an impressive nutritional profile. They are very low in calories, low on sodium and fat, and have good fiber contents. They are good source of potassium, and essential B-vitamins (riboflavin, niacin, and selenium).
